Rainy days

I was seated in the big brown comfy chair in my office.  About to start my day…mug of tea and bible in front of me.  As I sat in silence I heard a strange sound.  A squeak in the floor?  I glanced over and saw nothing out of the ordinary.  I turned back to my tea.  And again…a strange sound.  This time I got up out of my chair and moved to the corner, trying to find the source of the sound.  And yikes – I stepped in a pool of water.  I glanced up and it all became clear.  The sound had been a drop of water landing on the hardwood floor.

It had been raining pretty steadily through the night and clearly, we had a leak in the roof. Water is beautiful and mesmerizing when it’s dancing in the ocean, sun shining on its surface. Or when it’s filled with bubbles in a nice hot bath. But when water shows up where it isn’t meant to be, it can be quite daunting.

I admit that I wasn’t overjoyed that our roof is leaking.  I envisioned a lot of inconvenience in the days to come.  But as the roofing contractor left our house with a plan to replace the roof, I felt a deep peace and gratitude. I was sure God was with us even in this inconvenience.

The puddle of water on my office floor was about two feet away from my laptop and inches from the printer.  A birthday gift for my grandson was also inches away.   But none of those things were damaged. The leak had seeped through the ceiling, dripping steadily right down on to the bare floor.  I came upon the leak before it had caused the ceiling to come crashing down in a great big mess.  The hardwood floor was wet, but not damaged. And a contractor came within hours of our call to him. So many things to be thankful for.

There have been days in recent months when it’s hard for me to be grateful in the midst of the messiness.  But today, I am very grateful for God’s small mercies. His mercies are new every morning. ( His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23)

I hope my eyes are open to see His mercies again tomorrow…come what may.
